A Guest Preacher Today

I won’t be posting a sermon today because I didn’t preach! A Navy Chaplain brought the word, in part because we are highlighting federal chaplains this season. From Memorial Day to Veterans Day we are having a special fundraiser for the Federal Service Chaplains Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is awarded to seminary students who are seeking to serve as military chaplains or chaplains in the federal prison system.

In that theme, we are singing The Navy Hymn as one of our songs today. Here is the first verse and some of my favorite ‘alternate verses’ out of the Armed Services Hymnal.

Eternal Father, strong to save,

Whose arm has bound the restless wave,

Who bids the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep.

O hear us when we cry to thee,

For those in peril on the sea.

Lord, guard and guide the ones who fly

Through the great spaces of the sky.

Be with them always in the air,

In darkening storms or sunlight fair.

O hear us when we lift our prayer

For those in peril in the air.

Eternal Father, grant, we pray,

To all Marines, both night and day,

The courage, honor, strength and skill

Their land to serve, thy law fulfill.

Be the strong shield forevermore

From every peril to the Corps.

Eternal Father, Lord of hosts,

Watch o’er the ones who guard our coasts,

Protect them from the raging seas

And give the light and life and peace.

Grant them from thy great throne above

The shield and shelter of thy love.

Lord, guard and guide the ones who fly

And those who on the ocean ply;

Be with our troops upon the land,

And all who for their country stand;

Be with these guardians day and night

And may their trust be in thy might.

God, who dost still the restless foam,

Protect the ones we love at home,

Provide that they should always be

By thine own grace both safe and free.

O Father, hear us when we pray

For those we love so far away.

Blessings to you,

Pastor Karla

I am a pastor and a retired Navy Chaplain who believes following Jesus in compassion, service and gratitude is the very best kind of doctrine. God is present in the world in the Spirit and in the church as the body of Christ. I am a One on the enneagram who lives to find the balance between having my 'to do list' all crossed off at the end of the day and being spontaneous in the moment. Biblical literacy is important to me, and I want to make the meaning of the Bible and its stories less of a mystery to the average person so the love of God comes through to them clearly.
